Sales managers of Team Maycoders went on a business trip to Fukuoka, Japan to explore the cosmetics industry of Japan. At this point, a small question came to mind. ‘Are we really different? - Korean cosmetics and Japanese cosmetics?’

Why do we think these two are different?

K-beauty and J-beauty are both terms used to refer to the skincare and beauty products and techniques originating from South Korea and Japan, respectively. While there may be some similarities between the two, there are also some notable differences.

K-beauty is often characterized by its focus on achieving a radiant and dewy complexion, referred to as "chok-chok" in Korean. It often involves a multi-step skincare routine that includes a variety of products such as toners, essences, serums, ampoules, and sheet masks. K-beauty products also often incorporate innovative ingredients like snail mucin, propolis, and fermented ingredients. This is why K-beauty tends to emphasize a more playful, experimental approach to beauty, with an emphasis on innovation and trendiness.

Several offline stores in Japan, we could easily find various mask packs and skincare lines on the shelves, of course with various and fancy designed containers.

In contrast, J-beauty tends to emphasize simplicity and minimalism in its skincare routines. It typically involves fewer steps and focuses on using high-quality, natural ingredients to achieve a healthy and youthful-looking complexion. J-beauty also places a strong emphasis on sun protection and often incorporates lightweight, non-greasy formulas to protect the skin from harmful UV rays. J-beauty tends to favor a more natural, understated makeup look, with a focus on enhancing the skin's natural beauty.

One of the famous Japanese brand, MUJI, also sells the cosmetics in their shops. The simple packages were very impressive. This is something to remember at a time when eco-friendly packaging materials are getting more important.

Overall, K-beauty and J-beauty both approach have their benefits and can be effective in achieving healthy and beautiful skin, and it ultimately comes down to personal preference and skin type.

What did we see in Japan?

Most of the companies that held meetings with us at “Beauty World, Japan Fukuoka” were selling skincare lines using a single raw material. Many companies were introducing products based on raw materials extracted from cord blood, hepatocytes and stem cells.

In addition, companies modeled on Korean skin care were also noticeable. It was using medical devices for skin and Korean cosmetics produced in Korea. In addition, some companies produced most of the products they sell in Korea.

Through a visit to Fukuoka Beauty World in Japan, it was found that although the concepts and marketing methods of cosmetics in Korea and Japan are quite different, the important thing in both markets is to strengthen the natural power of the skin.
